The Journey Of a Thousand Miles Begins With a Single Step

The Journey Of a Thousand Miles Begins With a Single Step

We’ve all heard that old saying “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” But some would argue what is the first step? is it for wealth? fame? relationships? or happiness? truth is a forward step in any direction is progress, however one must ask them self if I achieve this goal will I be happier? will more of what you want really make you happy? Our society has programmed us to believe we will be happy once we get…Yet we still look for that one shinny object to bring us happiness.

It has been debated by some great minds over the years, the true meaning of that which makes us happy. Each of us has a different definition of what makes us happy. We’ve all been there though once that new car we worked so hard for is finally parked in our driveway, the newness wears off quick!

Over the years I’ve come in contact with many different people who have interesting ideas as to what the true happiness is for them, however after becoming an observer it’s not that hard to figure out what it is.

Back in high school I can remember a friend of mine who’s parents were well off, never went without a thing, his first car was only a couple of years old while the one I was driving came from two cars made into one! Don’t get me wrong I was grateful to even have a car at the time, yet my buddy was always looking for a better and faster car! And when he found one his dad bought it for him! Yikes luck guy right? Well not exactly, he had fast cars and all the money he’d needed yet most of the time he was not happy or satisfied.

Years later another buddy of mine, a guy who live a very humble life, he owned a compact car, owned a small house and worked at a simple job, his life was very predictable. His philosophy was one of low expectations, that way you won’t be disappointed if you don’t hit all your goals. Could he be right? If you lower your expectations in life you’ll live a happier life? Was my buddy a happy person? If you’d spend time with him you’d realize he was humble but not completely happy, living with less than you are capable is not a life of fulfillment.

Lastly another buddy of mine believes being on top of your game each day is what makes him happy, or so I’m told. He is a type A personality does not take no for an answer. His philosophy is to live life on the edge, shoot for the moon, full throttle…I see him at the gym from time to time. His workouts are intense he is in great physical shape eats right gets the proper rest, yet  with all that effort there are days he seems lost in thought, when I ask his what’s the matter he says, Steve I got a lot on my mind right now I’m a bit stressed out just need to figure out this Issue…

Although my friends are completely opposite with different philosophies about life and what the meaning of happiness is, I’ve learned there are no shortcuts to get to the top hard work and discipline is the secret there, however one thing is true though, no matter what it is in life you strive for as long as your making forward progress which is measurable we will continue to move forward, it’s like a coach behind you every day encouraging you.

Never give up on your dreams and goals no matter how big or small. Find away to move ahead a little each day.

Before long you’ll get there!
