Public Speaking…Relax Just be Yourself

Public Speaking…Relax Just be Yourself

When ever public speaking is brought into a conversation, we think about professionals, business, lectures, seminars, politicians, as well as anyone who is addressing a room full of people, but for most public speaking can be intimidating or even stressful. However did you realize whenever your engaged in conversation (even if just a simple hey what’s up) you are utilizing a natural skill we all have!

In short public speaking is your ability to communicate with an audience. Provide information which pertains to a persons interests in a manor easily understood. It doesn’t matter if your speaking to a handful of people or a room full of people, the goal is to engage and connect with your audience. The subject matter must be explained in a manor which engages and peaks interest within your audience. Have you ever been to a seminar only to be disappointed the speaker was dry, boring, and emotionless? Did you remember the message which was being sent?

Good public speaking is not related the type of business, product, or service being sold, it is a matter of whether or not a good connection is made to the audience and how effective the message is received on the other end. Public speaking is not limited to those people seeking to speak in large groups of people. You and I utilize this skill in our everyday lives, the quality of your life is directly related to the language which we use in everyday life!

Getting a yes from another person is influence, when your ideal is communicated in a way that changes their thinking, the door opens and is now positioned for your idea to be focused on. Have you ever been pulled over by a police officer and when he asked you “do you know why I pulled you over” all the time he is speaking you know the real reason but you say no officer I do not! We are speaking in a manor in order to influence the police officer to not give us a ticket! Same is true at home, work or with a friend, you’re trying to get them to act, think and feel differently.

The same is true when speaking in front of an audience. However there a few things to keep in mind when addressing a group: People listen to someone they trust. Be honest, don’t immediately ask the crowd if they understand or agree. This could intimidate those who don’t understand or trust you yet.

Tell a story people can relate when your ideal is communicated in a way which pertains to a real life situation they might have already experienced.

Don’t walk around the stage, this can be a distraction and may not let people feel comfortable with you. Stay in one spot. This is also a sign we are nervous or unprepared. When an actor takes the stage they are confident and relaxed, however many hours of practice has allowed them to remember their lines without even thinking about them.

Open Mic

When speaking to the crowd look at them, never look down as your thinking about what to say, this disconnects people from the message your trying to communicate.

Be yourself, often time we think we need to be “like” someone in order for people to like us, yet the best way for a message to be sent is through our natural and unique way we are. If we’re authentic and honest, most people will like and respect you. The message will be communicated in your words. This will become your brand.

People like real people not those who are pretending to be someone their not. So relax and just be you.

You’ll be amazed with your results!
